I'm not sure what it is about this song, but for some reason it resonates with me and evokes comparisons to other male acts of the period such as M, Falco, and perhaps a little Taco too. Giving it a serious listen now it certainly is an odd duck, being from a relatively obscure play born in the 80s. The play, 'Chess', was a musical written by a few former members of Abba. I think I have a fondness for the song since they played it endlessly on MTV and VH1 back in the day.
Murray Head- 'One Night in Bangkok'
The song reached #3 in the US charts (but only #12 on the UK, Head's homeland) which is pretty impressive. The song was banned in Thailand due to some off-color, slightly racist lyrics. Mr. Head himself has released a staggering 19 studio albums since 1972, none of which have had any chart or cultural impact at all! Poor guy.
